BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The total surface area of Cyprus is 9251 km². The island of Cyprus is named after copper, its Latin name being 'cuprum'. As centuries drifted by, Cyprus has been a melting pot of great civilisations. From the Neolithic settlements on the northern coast to the Egyptian, Persian, Roman, Venetian, Ottoman, and British Empires, its strategic location at the crossroads of East and West has bestowed the island with a rich and colourful history spanning over centuries. Recent history of Cyprus can be summarised by referring to the Republic of Cyprus which was established in 1960 between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots with the guarantor countries of Great Britain, Turkey and Greece. Turkey's peace intervention followed troubles amongst local people in 1974 since then the island has been divided into two parts. Greek Cypriots to live in the south part of the island and Turkish Cypriots to live in the north part of the island.
Following the opening of the border in 2003 there are no longer any restrictions on border crossings especially for EU citizens since the south part of Cyprus joint the EU in 2004. EU citizens are free to cross and spend as much time as they wish on either side of the border by producing their ID cards or passports at crossing points any time of the day (24hrs). This situation has further facilitated interest by foreign visitors and therefore enhanced the already important tourism industry on the island. The primary source of income of this island is tourism and the island receives 3.5 million visitors per annum. 1.3 million of the visitors to the island are from the United Kingdom. The rest of the visitors come from other countries mainly from Scandinavia and western European countries. The North part of the island receives just under 1 million visitors per annum. |
