TOURISM
As previously stated, tourism is the most important industry throughout the whole island. This is not only due to the current structure and revenue levels of the industry but also due to the potential the tourism industry offers for this island in the near future.

Global tourism arrival figures have already been outlined in previous sections of this document. However, an exemplary breakdown can be given as follows; in 2004, North Cyprus had about 600,000 tourist arrivals compared to 2.3 million for the south part of the island. Almost two-thirds of tourists to North Cyprus have typically been from Turkey over the years. Net tourism revenues exceed the $62 million merchandise export revenues. The contribution of trade and tourism to GDP is 18 percent with the share of hotels and restaurants at 3 percent of GDP.

Despite being an important source of foreign exchange for the Turkish Cypriot community, this sector is under developed when compared with the south part of the island. However, relevant government bodies have taken numerous measures with the objective of further developing this industry. There are and estimated 128 hotels and guest houses in North Cyprus that report employing about 2,400 persons. In addition, the tourist industry includes restaurants, travel agencies, and casinos. This sector obtains less than 1 percent of bank loans.

Even though the Turkish Cypriot tourism sector has had difficulty in promoting and marketing internationally in previous years mainly due to political reasons, since the 2004 UN Annan plan and simultaneous referenda in both North Cyprus and South Cyprus, there has been some progress. This is due to the fact that the international arenas are now more aware of the situation in the island and are more empathic towards North Cyprus and its people. Additionally, both private and public sector are now better equipped in international tourism and hospitality marketing through the recruitment of much better and more professional experts in this field.
